How Long Does it Take to Find a Nanny?

This depends on the family. We don't like to "rush the party" as they say.  Finding the right person to care for your children is a really important processes.  It could take a week or up to a month.  It really is all about what a family is looking for.  We take the time to ask what families' wish list is when conducting our searches, and in some cases what hasn't worked in the past.  We do our best to make the process as smooth as we possibly can.

What Is A Nanny?

A nanny's role is to provide a safe, caring, nurturing and a stimulating environment in which children thrive and develop. General they are responsible for most all tasks related to the children’s care. Each nanny position may have slightly different responsibilities, depending on the family needs, the ages of the children and other factors, however typically nannies are responsible for keeping the children’s areas clean and organized and doing the children’s laundry.  In addition to providing attentive, high quality childcare, nannies may be asked to transport children to and from activities, grocery shop for the children and plan the children’s daily schedule.

While some families may ask the nanny to take on additional household tasks, such as housekeeping and the parent’s laundry, depending on the position, these duties may be better suited for a housekeeper.

What Is A Babysitter?

A sitter's primary responsibility is to keep the children safe and cared for in their parent’s absence. Unlike a nanny, a sitter isn’t typically involved in fostering the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of the children in her care on a daily basis.

How Do I Pay My Nanny?

How a Nanny is paid is up to the family.  Modern Minders is a referral agency.  This means that once you extend an offer of employment, the childcare professional becomes your employee.  All childcare professionals are paid directly by the families.

There are many services that we suggest using that can aid with your nanny taxes.  A list of such services are listed under our family resource page.

*The IRS considers any nanny (or other person) that works in your home to be a household “employee” W2, and not an independent contractor 1099, no matter how you label them. You are responsible to withhold and pay certain federal employment taxes for all your household employees.*

What Type of Benefits Should I Offer My Nanny?

Benefits are not mandated by Modern Minders or by law.  However some additional benefits to consider are health and dental insurance, use of a family car or transportation allowance, paid vacation, paid sick leave, 401K, the opportunity for paid-travel and expenses on family vacations, and a continuing education allowance for childcare related education.

Live-in nannies are also offered housing (separate bedroom, separate bathroom, and use of the common spaces within the home).  If the nanny is relocating to accept a position with a family, the family may want to consider paying for one-way airline, train or bus fare and other travel-related expenses.
